Praise for The Rural Alberta Advantage’s debut, ‘Hometowns’: NME – 9/10 Awesome Clash – ‘Hometowns’ is one of the best debuts of the year Uncut – The RAA’s narratives are as expansive as the prairie where singer-songwriter Nils Edenloff grew up, but they’re also full of resonant, intimate detail. Clattering tearaway percussion lends his rustic pop a crucial urgency
Signed to Saddle Creek (home to Bright Eyes, Cursive, Azure Ray et al), The Rural Alberta Advantage write percussive folk songs about hometowns and heartbreak. When Canadian singer-songwriter Nils Edenloff moved across country from Fort McMurray, Alberta to Toronto, Ontario and penned a series of homesick odes to his former province he didn’t expect to meet likeminded souls at an open-mic night. But a chance meeting with Paul Banwatt who adds raucous percussion to the mix and Amy Cole who provides keys, percussion and backing vocals, led to the formation of The Rural Alberta Advantage.
As The Rural Alberta Advantage they headed out on the road – touring has now become a way of life for these relentless giggers - and began writing what would become their debut album, Hometowns. Hometowns caught the ears of bloggers across North America and the homegrown hype led to The RAA appearing on End of Year Best Ofs in a host of newspapers, blogs, and podcasts across North America and Europe including Pitchfork.
A companion piece to their debut Hometowns, The Rural Alberta Advantage’s new album, Departing, is due out in the UK on May 2nd 2011 on Saddle Creek. On the new album, they’ve further refined the exuberant guitar work, intricate percussion, everything-on-the-table vocals and infectious, keyboard-sprinkled arrangements that have won them so many fans. Departing strings together themes of small towns, Canadian Fall and Winter, break ups and redemption. Highlights include the affecting North Star, the stark regret of Tornado and the storming, percussive surge of Stamp.
Bringing closure to the exploration of themes of love, loss and leaving that began with Hometowns, Departing contains ten songs about growing up and moving on.
